=========

I am very sorry to inform you that I had stepped down as “The Organizer” for this group to focus on spend more time on my new startups F50 and also investment. It was lots of fun for organizing this group since 2008.  I met so many great people including founders.

I am confident that SVE will remain as a great place for early startup founders to connect  Of cause, SVE always welcome new energies to help: http://goo.gl/BvleX. I will still organize few events myself in the future, including hiking to Big Basin, Biking around Bay, etc.
BTW, I am also stepping down from most of the meetups I organized / created last few years.

Analyzing Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital’s Investment Syndicates

Community, Investor, Venture Forum

(CBInsights)

In venture capital, network centrality is an important driver of VC performance.  In short, better networked VCs have better fund performance.  This is not networking in the “I have 500+ contacts on LinkedIn” sense but means being networked with other high quality investors to share dealflow, syndicate deals, etc.

Since VCs often syndicate their deals with other VCs, these co-investment patterns reveal a web of relationships between firms that can be analyzed to provide insight into which firms are closer than others, whose networks truly are stronger, where firms have overlapping investment strategies and where funds may be sourcing their dealflow from (what seed funds or angels for example).

Andreessen Horowitz Investment Syndicate Trends

Andreessen Horowitz (A16Z) has made a number of seed investments over the past two years, including over 30 in 2013 year-to-date. And its most frequent co-investor in such deals has been SV Angel, who has co-invested with A16Z in over 25 seed rounds and 48 deals overall. As the year-over-year trend line highlights, A16Z’s syndicate with SV Angel has increased dramatically in the last year with recent co-investments including Swiftype and Vastrm.

Fellow hyperactive VC Greylock Partners has also seen its relationship with A16Z grow recently. The two firms have made over 30 co-investments, including four in 2013 YTD. Below are A16Z’s top 5 co-investor by number of deals.

a16zcoinvestorsWhen we look beyond who they invest with to who invests in A16Z companies prior to them getting involved, it is not surprising to find Y Combinator as the most frequent investor in companies before A16Z invests. In 2011, A16Z jumped on board YC’s Start Fund program. A16Z has also made a number of follow-on investments to startups first backed by prominent NY-based investor Union Square Ventures including Shapeways and Dwolla, as well as Khosla Ventures (Boku, Lookout).

Meetup offered Automatic dues extension to all organizers

Community

Meetup CEO announced automatic dues extension to all organizers today.

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Scott Heiferman <outage@meetup.com>
Date: Wed, Mar 5, 2014 at 12:17 PM
Subject: Meetup Organizers: Automatic dues extension

Meetup
Hello Meetup Organizers,

First and foremost, we’re happy to report that Meetup is up, running, and stable.

We’ve issued a 7 day credit to all Meetup Organizers because we know how difficult it was for many of your Meetups to actually Meetup during the recent server attack. This extension was added to your current billing cycle and has been automatically applied to your account. The change is reflected on your account page, and there’s nothing further you need to do.

If your Meetup Group faced an extraordinary challenge due to the outage and there is something else we can do to help you out, please email us at outage@meetup.com — we want to hear!

We’ve heard from Meetup Organizers that it’d be helpful if Meetup HQ sent an email to all Meetup Members to update them, and to let them know they should go see what’s happening in their Meetup Groups. We’ll do that over the next couple days.

The last thing I want to say is thank you for your patience and for doing what you do. This week reminded us of how many people are rooting for Meetup, all of us. Why? Because we stand for something important. So let’s keep creating community and not let them down!

Scott Heiferman,
Co-Founder
and CEO, Meetup

PS. If you have other questions or suggestions, note that we’ve published a list of FAQs on our blog, which should help to answer some of your questions.

Meetup.com is back, “data is secure”, said Scott Heiferman CEO of meetup

Community

Meetup.com is back online after a lasting new type of DDoS attack, see techcrunch

Just received email from Scott Heiferman, the CEO of meetup few minute ago, all the data are secure!  I am so glad meetup is back online.

———- Forwarded message ———-
From: Scott Heiferman <outage@meetup.com>

Meetup
Meetup Organizers around the world,

You may have had trouble accessing Meetup’s site or apps over the past few days, and you may have heard that Meetup has suffered a massive attack on our servers — a DDoS attack, which is a barrage of traffic intended to make services unavailable. Organizer and member data is secure, including credit card information. No data has been accessed or stolen. (See our blog for all the details on the attack and our response.)

This has been a tough few days for Meetup, and I know it’s been a real struggle for many of you to manage your Meetups while our site and apps were down. You should know that we’re listening to your questions and concerns and that you can count on meetup to be stable and reliable soon, to bring back all features, and to minimize the effects of the service outages.

Thanks for everything you do to create community,

Scott Heiferman,
Co-Founder
and CEO, Meetup

Presented by Francesco Rieppi, Co-Founder & CEO

“I am Co-Founder & CEO at Spotlime – the simplest app to discover and book events last-minute. Before founding Spotlime, I worked in VC (MAS Angel Fund), consulting (The Boston Consulting Group) and banking (Barclays Capital) in Germany, Italy and UK.”

Race Yourself: “We are building an augmented reality motivational fitness platform games for wearables and mobile for running, cycling, in gyms and skiing. “

Race Yourself is a unified, gamified, fitness platform leveraging wearable technology, and based on an augmented reality experience to motivate and entertain users. At first it will be for Google Glass, but imagine being able to ‘Race Yourself’, everywhere you can see a heads up display, smart watch or screen in gyms/ on your phone. Race against a 3D virtual avatar of yourself, against friends or celebrities, a well known computer game character, or fleeing from flesh eating zombies pursuing at your target pace. Race on foot, bike, through gates or slope style on skis or a snowboard, or even whilst sky diving mid-air. The point is that tens of millions of people are underwhelmed by their fitness trackers because all they do is track. We’re turning it into a game by race-ifying it, providing useful real-time feedback to motivate better performance, and we’ll extend the experience (over time) to other sports.

For serious athletes, this may be racing yourself, your team mates and gaining on-screen technique feedback. For others, this may mean challenging groups of friends or earning ‘sweat credit’ from burning calories and building streaks to unlock further features and rewards.

We’re putting everything we’ve got into our first product right now but at the core of it we’ve built a platform entirely focused on enabling rich (and stable) spatial experiences in a battery-optimised, low CPU environment. Whether as an API for other developers or a ready-made platform for brands – we are building something with many revenue streams to explore.

The virtual reality fitness angle has been incredible for talent acquisition – we’ve built a superstar-only engineering-led algorithm, AR and AAA gaming team to rapidly create a new tier in the fitness software market.

We were over-subscribed for our first funding round ($325,000) which we closed early October and our Beta launch during CES week received loads of positive press including a TV appearance on Fox Business and articles in Mashable, TNW, Metro, Mirror, Venture Beat, Tech Crunch, Men’s Health, The Mail, Fast Company and Pocket Gamer.

Presented by Hayley Melidonis, CEO

“With a background in engineering, banking and venture capital, I’ve seen how life changing taking fitness seriously has been for me. Now I’ve made it my mission to build he world’s most exciting exercise platform.”

Onvedeo: Onvedeo built the Micro-localized, Auto-generated, Hyper-targeted video

Video marketing is widely accepted as being the best Online marketing tool out there, but videos are hard to produce, really expensive, can’t scale and are not personalized. Onvedeo creates micro-localized, auto-generated, hyper-targeted videos. We solve the video marketing challenges in the current online market with an automated video engine that produces high quality and personalized videos easily, affordably and at scale. Onvedeo videos drive more engagement and stronger SEO. Our clients can finally compete with the Zillows and Trulias of the world for Google ranking simply by having one of our videos on their site.

Berry Creek Falls

Founder Challenge: Berry Creek Falls – 11 miles hiking #svesocial @bigbasin Redwood Forest

Community

Please join me, challenging yourself like never before with one the most beautiful nature near Silicon Valley: 7 hours hiking event to see the most beautiful falls within 1 hour of driving distance from SV: Berry Creek Falls at Big Basin Redwood Forest. You can only see this fall after 3 hours hiking!

  • The 7 hours full hiking include 30m pitching session at Berry’s fall and 45 minutes lunch break. This will be the longest hiking event I organized. So please do join me if you exercise or hike regularly.

Duration: 7 hours (including 30m pitching session at Berry Creek Fall and 45 minutes lunch break)

    Length:  11Miles

    http://www.everytrail.com/guide/berry-creek-falls-loop-at-big-basin-redwoods-state-park

    Official map:

    http://www.bigbasin.org/trailsberrycreekfalls.html

Overview: Redwoods and waterfalls make this the best hike in the San Francisco Bay Area.

If you’re up for 11 miles and a thousand feet of elevation gain spread out over a half-day, you’ll be amazed to see the strain melt away in this land of the giants.

Veteran Berry Creek Falls hikers recommend a counter-clockwise loop starting on the Sunset Trail, turning left on to the Berry Creek Falls Trail, taking another left onto the Skyline-to-the-Sea trail, which returns to the trailhead.

When to go: This hike can be done in almost any weather. Winter rains bring greater flow to the falls, but the shorter days create a greater risk of running out of daylight.

Tips: Buy a map at the park HQ – it’s easy to get lost at Big Basin without one.

Bring your lunch, and enough water,

Parking lot – Skyline to the sea – Berry’s Fall – Sunset

    Trails:

Parking lot across from park headquarters at the large marker for the Redwood Trail. Continue past the restrooms and cross the bridge over Opal Creek.
