About Startup Weekend

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 400 past events in 100 countries around the world in 2011.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups.

Dropcam CEO Greg Duffy will speak at GMIC SV

Entrepreneurship, Events, GMIC

Greg Duffy is CEO and co-founder of Dropcam, maker of the award-winning Dropcam Wi-Fi video monitoring cameras and cloud service, will have a fireside chat at GMIC SV. And I will have the honor to moderator the session.

At age 13, Greg received a full scholarship from UT-Arlington. At just 27, Greg has over a decade of software engineering experience. He founded VOIP-infrastructure company NCF Technologies and has held roles at IBM and Microsoft. Prior to Dropcam, Greg was the Principal Software Engineer at Xobni, where he created Xobni search, the fastest email search for Microsoft Outlook.

After seeing his father’s frustrations with IP cameras, Greg sought to build a better one. A year later Dropcam was born.

Paul Graham, Founder, Y-Combinator to Speak at GMIC

Entrepreneurship, GMIC, Investor, Speakers

Paul Graham, GMIC speaker and Co-founder of Y-combinator has turned about 564 half-cooked business ideas into runaway hits valued at $11.7 Billion. Their model changed the face of traditional investing. Each year around 60 startups are selected from a pool of 1000 applications. In exchange for 7% equity Y-combinator makes an initial investment ranging between $17K and $20K with each startup combined with $80K funding from Yuri Milner, Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst, and Maverick Capital. Compared to traditional VC’s they don’t read business plans and invest small amounts to support the three month cycle.
